7 July 1846: American Flag Over California
On July 7th 1846 Commodore Sloat raised the American flag over Monterey, California. This event occurred only three months after war had been declared upon Mexico by the United States.
William Hawkins at National Review Online has posted an interesting article on the most misunderstood, and lied about, American war. He notes the the failure to resolve the issues between the two nations, mainly the American annexation of Texas, was mainly the fault of Mexico's refusal to accept the Treaty of San Jacinto. They still haven't:
However, Hawkins also notes that when the Southwest was claimed by Mexico, the Mexican people couldn't be dragged into the region.
Regarding California, it should be pointed out that up until 1821, it was a province of Spain. California became a nominal province of Mexico after its independence. I write "nominal" because Mexico City never actually governed the place. What with Russians building forts along the north coast, adventurers creating private empires in the Central Valley and endless fighting with locals whenever Mexico sent troops north a general state of anarchy existed.

Californio, not happy with Mexico City.

Mexican textbooks claim that the American southwest was “stolen” and will someday be regained. Radical elements in the movement championing an “open border” between the U.S. and Mexico hope to someday fulfill this irredentist ambition. They see a mass movement of people overwhelming the “anglo” population of the border states.

The Spanish and Mexicans never settled many people in Arizona due to the Apaches. It was only after the surrender of Geronimo that lots of people came here.
